Emergency Dental Care: Trauma & Cracked Teeth

At Hallam Dental Clinic, our dentists are attentive and precise, delivering a smooth,
stress-free experience when you need it most. We understand that a dental injury or sudden pain can be highly distressing. As general dentists, we are highly competent
in providing prompt emergency care to relieve pain, stabilise your condition, and
protect your teeth from long-term damage.

What is a Dental Emergency?
A dental emergency is any sudden issue involving your teeth, gums, or jaw that
requires immediate professional attention. Delaying treatment can lead to spreading
infections, worsening pain, and more complex or costly procedures later on.
Common emergencies include:

  • Severe Toothaches: Sharp, throbbing, or continuous pain that keeps you awake.
  • Facial Swelling: Swelling in your gums, cheek, or jaw, which indicates an active infection or abscess.
  • Dental Trauma: Knocked-out, loosened, or displaced teeth due to an accident or sporting injury.
  • Cracked or Broken Teeth: Fractures that expose the inner layers of the tooth, causing sharp pain or sensitivity.
  • Uncontrolled Bleeding: Continuous bleeding in the mouth following an injury or tooth extraction.
  • Lost Restorations: Lost fillings, crowns, or bridges that cause sudden pain or expose sharp tooth edges.

Comprehensive Trauma Management
Accidents happen, and knowing exactly what to do in the first few minutes can save your tooth.
Knocked-Out Tooth (Avulsed)

  • Immediate Action: Pick up the tooth by the smooth top part (the crown)—never touch the sensitive root. If it is clean, gently try to push it back into its socket in your gum.
  • Storage: If you cannot replant it, place the tooth in a small container of plain milk or inside your cheek to keep the cells alive. Do not store it in water.
  • Time-Critical Care: Contact us immediately. Replanting a natural tooth has the highest success rate if a dentist treats it within 30 to 60 minutes of the accident.

Displaced or Loose Teeth

  • The Injury: A heavy impact can push a tooth sideways, deeper into the gum, or pull it partially out of its socket.
  • Our Treatment: We gently move the tooth back into its correct position and secure it using a temporary, flexible dental splint. This holds the tooth stable for a few weeks so the surrounding bone and gum tissue can heal around it.

Understanding and Treating Cracked Teeth
Teeth can crack due to physical trauma, chewing on hard objects, or heavy nighttime grinding. Because cracks are often microscopic, they can be difficult to see but cause distinct symptoms.
Signs of a Cracked Tooth

  • Sharp pain when biting down or releasing your bite.
  • Sudden pain when consuming hot, cold, or sugary foods and drinks.
  • Pain that comes and goes, making it difficult to pinpoint exactly which tooth hurts.

How We Restore Cracked Teeth

  • Minor Surface Cracks: Fine lines that only affect the outer enamel are purely cosmetic and rarely require urgent treatment.
  • Deep Structural Cracks: If a crack extends into the deeper dentine layer, we protect it immediately using composite bonding or a temporary filling to seal out bacteria.
  • Capping the Fracture: To stop a crack from spreading completely through the root, the tooth will eventually require a permanent crown to bind the structure back together.
  • Nerve Involvement: If the crack has reached the inner pulp chamber, a root canal treatment will be required to clear out the damaged nerve before placing a protective crown.

What to Expect at Your Emergency Appointment

  • Priority Booking: We reserve dedicated daily emergency slots to ensure urgent cases receive same-day care.
  • Targeted Assessment: We use safe digital X-rays to precisely diagnose the root cause of your pain or assess hidden bone trauma.
  • Immediate Pain Relief: Our primary goal is to get you out of discomfort. We will numb the area, drain any swelling, or place temporary seals to instantly stabilise your mouth.
  • Clear Treatment Plans: Once your pain is managed, we explain your definitive long-term options, timelines, and upfront costs so you can make an informed choice.
