Deep Cleaning and Root Planing

Deep Cleaning and Root Planning

At Hallam Dental Clinic, our dentists are very caring and smooth to give you a stress-
free experience, even during advanced gum treatments. We are highly competent in
providing professional deep cleaning and root planing to stop gum disease in its
tracks and protect your teeth from bone loss.

What is Deep Cleaning and Root Planing?
Unlike a standard routine clean that focus only on the part of the tooth you can see,
a deep clean goes beneath the gumline. This specialized procedure is the primary
treatment for periodontal (gum) disease, treating hidden areas where normal
brushing and flossing cannot reach.

The Two Crucial Steps
Scaling (Deep Cleaning)

  • What we do: We use advanced dental instruments to carefully scrape away hardened tartar (calculus) and bacterial plaque from the surfaces of your teeth and from deep inside the pockets between your gums and teeth.
  • Why it matters: Removing this built-up bacteria stops the chronic irritation and infection that causes bleeding, swelling, and gum recession.

Root Planing

  • What we do: We gently smooth out the rough spots on the roots of your teeth under the gums.
  • Why it matters: Smoothing the root surfaces makes it incredibly difficult for new bacteria and tartar to stick to them. It also creates a clean, ideal surface that allows your gum tissue to heal and firmly reattach to the teeth.

Why This Treatment is Essential for Your Health

  • Saves Your Teeth: Left untreated, advanced gum disease destroys the underlying jawbone supporting your teeth, which is the leading cause of loose teeth and tooth loss in adults.
  • Stops Bleeding and Bad Breath: It directly targets the deep bacterial pockets that cause chronic bad breath and gums that bleed when you brush.
  • Supports Overall Body Health: Clinical studies show that chronic gum disease is heavily linked to other serious systemic health issues, including heart disease and uncontrolled diabetes. Treating your gums protects your entire body.

What to Expect During and After Treatment

  • Total Comfort: Because we clean deep under the gumline, our gentle dentists will completely numb the area with a local anaesthetic so you feel relaxed and completely pain-free throughout the session.
  • The Healing Phase: It is entirely normal to experience some mild gum tenderness, slight swelling, or minor bleeding for a few days after the procedure. Your teeth may also feel a bit more sensitive to hot and cold temperatures temporarily while the gums heal.
  • Long-Term Success: After your deep clean, maintaining excellent daily brushing and flossing at home is vital. We will schedule regular maintenance check-ups to monitor your gum healing and ensure your smile stays strong and stable.
