Teeth Whitening

At Hallam Dental Clinic, our dentists are attentive and precise, delivering a smooth,
stress-free experience from start to finish. We are highly competent in professional
teeth whitening, utilizing dental literature-backed methods to clear away stubborn
discoloration safely, effectively, and comfortably.

How Teeth Whitening Works
In modern clinical dentistry, whitening is achieved through a chemical process called
oxidation. The active whitening agents safely penetrate your porous enamel and
dentine to break down dark stain pigments into smaller, less visible particles.

While traditional treatments rely primarily on peroxides, modern dental science has
expanded to include advanced peroxide-free options. The primary active ingredients
used include:

  • Hydrogen Peroxide: A fast-acting agent used in high concentrations for rapid, immediate in-office results.
  • Carbamide Peroxide: A slower-releasing agent that breaks down into hydrogen peroxide over several hours, making it highly ideal and gentle for overnight home treatments.
  • PAP (Phthalimidoperoxycaproic Acid): A modern, clinically proven peroxide-free mineral acid that oxidizes stains through epoxidation without releasing harsh free radicals, eliminating the risk of tooth sensitivity or gum irritation.

1. Professional Take-Home Whitening
This option gives you full, long-lasting control over your whitening journey in the comfort of your own home.
Usage Instructions

1. Prepare: Brush and floss your teeth thoroughly before starting.
2. Apply Gel: Place a thin, continuous layer of the prescribed gel into the front channels of your custom trays.
3. Insert & Clean: Press the trays gently over your teeth and immediately wipe away any excess gel from your gums with a clean gauze to avoid irritation.
4. Wear Time:

  • For Carbamide Peroxide, wear the trays overnight or for at least 2 hours daily for about one week.
  • For Hydrogen Peroxide or specialized daytime formulas, wear the trays for 30 to 45 minutes daily.

5. Rinse & Protect: Remove the trays, rinse your mouth with lukewarm water, and wait 30 minutes to 2 hours before brushing your teeth to prevent sensitivity. If minor sensitivity occurs, apply Tooth Mousse into your trays to soothe the enamel. Always store your trays clean and dry in their protective container.

2. In-Office Express Whitening
For immediate, maximum results, our in-office treatment safely brightens your teeth by several shades in a single short session.
What Happens During the Appointment

  • Assessment & Clean: Your dentist cleans your teeth and records your starting shade.
  • Gum Shielding: If a high-strength peroxide gel is used, we apply a protective barrier over your lips and gums to keep them fully safe.
  • Gel Cycles: The premium whitening gel is applied to the teeth and left on for 15–20 minutes. This cycle is repeated 2–4 times during your 60 to 90-minute appointment.
  • Instant Finish: The gel is rinsed away, and a soothing desensitizing agent is applied, leaving you with immediate, radiant results.

Expected Outcomes and Suitability

  • Varying Results: Yellow, orange, and brown stains (from coffee, tea, or red wine) respond beautifully. Greyish stains or intrinsic discolorations caused by certain medications do not respond as effectively.
  • Restoration Limits: Whitening treatments only change the shade of natural tooth structure. Existing crowns, bridges, porcelain veneers, or large white fillings will not change colour and may need to be replaced after your treatment to match your bright new smile.
  • Who is Not Suitable: Whitening is not recommended if you have untreated decay, active gum disease, heavily worn enamel, or if you are currently pregnant or breastfeeding.

Critical Aftercare and Maintenance

  • The White Diet: For the first 24 to 48 hours after whitening, your enamel pores are open and highly susceptible to restaining. Avoid tobacco, vaping, tea, coffee, red wine, soy sauce, berries, and heavily colored foods.
  • Long-Term Longevity: Whitening results typically last anywhere from 6 months to 2 years depending on your lifestyle habits. Keep your custom trays safe, as you can easily purchase top-up gel kits from our clinic for a quick 18 to 24-month maintenance touch-up.
